If you’re looking for a Caribbean destination that combines adventure, relaxation, and family-friendly fun, look no further than Ambergris Caye, Belize. With its turquoise waters, laid-back island vibe, and rich cultural experiences, this little slice of paradise is perfect for families with kids of all ages.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to plan the perfect family trip to Ambergris Caye: how to get there, where to stay, what to do, and our favorite local eats.
Ambergris Caye is located just off the coast of mainland Belize and is easily accessible.
Fly into Belize City International airport (BZE): Most international travelers arrive here.
Island hop by plane: Tropic Air or Maya Island Air offer quick, 15-minute flights to the island. This is our recommendation and if it's a clear day, you'll experience the most beautiful views that Belize has to offer. We have always used Tropic Air and been very pleased with them.
Take the ferry: A scenic 1.5-hour water taxi ride is also an option. This is the cheaper option, but keep in mind that you have to first take a taxi to the ferry port in Belize City.
Tip: If you're traveling with kids, especially younger ones, the flight is usually faster and more convenient.
There are plenty of family-friendly resorts and rentals on the island that offer space, amenities, and access to fun activities.
Mahogany Bay Resort: Great for families with older kids. It has spacious villas and access to a private beach club.
Ramon's Village Resort: (one of our favorites) A secluded tropical sanctuary, centrally located in town with a variety of accommodation styles
Grand Caribe Belize: A full-service resort with multiple pools and on-site dining.
Rent a golf cart to get around is a must. It’s the main mode of transportation on the island, and the kids love it! There are so many places to explore and great restaurants to try throughout the island and it's so much easier to do all that with a golf cart. It's definitely part of the experience of Ambergris Caye.
We highly recommend using Aviz Golf Cart Rental (click here) during your stay. They will work with to coordinate a smooth experience from pickup to drop-off. They have both 4 and 6 seater carts to rent and they are so easy to work with. Be sure to use CODE: family travel 20% for a discount on your next rental.
Ambergris Caye offers a great mix of relaxation and adventure:
Snorkel at Hol Chan Marine Reserve: Swim with turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays, and colorful fish.
Visit Secret Beach: Calm waters, food stands, and floating docks and playgrounds make it great for families.
Explore the island by golf cart: Discover local shops, amazing views and beach spots. This is the best way to enjoy all the island has to offer.
Day trip to Caye Caulker: A more relaxed island just a boat ride away.
Blue Water Grill: A local favorite for Belizean cuisine.
Palapa Bar: Great views, laid-back atmosphere, and floating tubes for older kids.
The Truck Stop: A food truck park with live music, games, and ice cream - perfect for families.
The Farmhouse Cafe: A family favorite of ours, it's a great place to stop for snacks, treats, and groceries.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the marine life.
- Bring some cash - although credit cards are widely accepted, some of the best places to eat and shop only take cash. USD are widely accepted, so no need to exchange currency.
- Bring water shoes for rocky beaches and boat days.
- Don’t overschedule - part of Ambergris Caye’s magic is its slow pace.
- Most people speak English, and the island is known for being welcoming and safe.
Ambergris Caye is a family-friendly destination where the memories come easy. Whether you're snorkeling alongside sea turtles or exploring the island in a golf cart, it's a place that makes both parents and kids feel like they're on the adventure of a lifetime.
